The NIA launches a new policy report: “Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Addressing the Invisible and Older Faces of Canada’s Opioid Crisis.”
Older adults are at higher risk of overdose, hospitalization and death from opioids. Several age-related factors make them more vulnerable, including metabolic changes and experiencing more chronic pain requiring higher doses of opioids.
With a growing and concerning over-reliance on opioid therapies for older Canadians, we need to re-examine the pain management strategies taught to current and future prescribers. See the NIA’s recommendations for tackling this issue in our new report: www.niageing.ca/opioids
